In the heart of Brevard County, a story of resilience and community spirit is unfolding. Polly Helm, a well-loved fitness instructor, is preparing for her second heart transplant, and the community she has inspired for years is rallying behind her.
Helm’s journey is a testament to her strength and the power of community support. As she awaits her lifesaving procedure at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, her story has touched the hearts of many, prompting an outpouring of assistance.
Polly Helm’s Inspiring Journey
Polly Helm has always been a beacon of positivity and health in Brevard County. Known for her “Five Fs”—family, friends, faith, fitness, and fun—Helm has spent years inspiring others as a fitness instructor at Fitness Club Merritt Island and teaching senior fitness classes. Her dedication to helping others and her passion for life have left a lasting impact on the Space Coast community.
More than a decade ago, Helm contracted a virus that severely damaged her heart, leading to her first heart transplant. She embraced her second chance at life with gratitude and enthusiasm, continuing to inspire those around her. However, her transplanted heart is now failing, and she requires a second transplant to survive.
Currently under close medical supervision in Jacksonville, Helm is expected to remain there for at least three additional months for recovery. The financial burdens of her lengthy medical journey are significant, with expenses for lodging, food, transportation, and household maintenance piling up. Friends, family, and supporters have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help offset these costs, allowing Helm to focus on her recovery.
The Community Responds
Those who know Helm describe her as a person who has always been about serving others and encouraging healthy living. Now, the community she has spent years uplifting is stepping up to support her during this critical time. Every donation, no matter the amount, will help provide financial relief as Helm focuses on her second heart transplant and continuing her journey toward recovery.

Fitness Club Merritt Island: A Community Hub
Fitness Club Merritt Island, where Helm has been a beloved instructor, is a locally owned and operated gym that has been a staple in Brevard County since 2003. Originally founded as Island Fitness of Brevard, the club has undergone many changes and improvements while remaining committed to its loyal following.
“Locally owned and operated, we pride ourselves in offering our services to help train, educate, and inform our members’ bodies and mindsets,” said co-owner Lou Manley. “Our full-service facility provides an ideal space for all ages to learn to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our gym has everything needed to help you reach your wellness goals.”
After a recent expansion project, the gym now features more than 21,000 square feet and includes additional exercise equipment, a new aerobics room, a turf area, and more. Fitness Club Merritt Island offers a wide range of classes and amenities, including an array of brand-new modern high-performance Hammer Strength training equipment, an on-site childcare area, and a protein and juice bar.
“Above all, we take pride in the cleanliness of our facility,” said Manley. “There is a fitness class for everyone!”
Manley and partner Steve Ash have been strong supporters of community organizations since taking ownership, sponsoring teams at Merritt Island High School and orchestrating several blood drives at the gym. Their commitment to the community mirrors the spirit of support that Helm has inspired.
