The Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency’s Northeast Park project is taking shape, promising to become a cornerstone for sports and community activities in Leon County. Sports Facilities: A Haven for Athletes
Amanda HeideckerLeon County Parks Director, highlights that the park is currently under full construction. The plans include a variety of sports facilitiessuch as football and soccer fields, softball and baseball fields, sand volleyball courts, and pickleball and basketball courts. These amenities are designed to support both competitive and recreational activities.
Heidecker emphasizes the park’s role in fostering local sports organizations. Leon County will partner with sports providers like Little League, Babe Ruth, and Pop Warnermaking Northeast Park a home for many sports groups. Additionally, the park will offer field reservations for community use when not occupied by these organizations.
Community Spaces: More Than Just Sports
Beyond the athletic facilities, Northeast Park will feature a 1,000-square-foot community rooma playground, picnic pavilions, green spaces, and a 1-mile walking trail. These additions are aimed at creating a welcoming environment for families and community events.
Heidecker notes that the park’s broader community value extends beyond athletics. Adding places for families to gather and community events to take place is a huge win and aligns with Leon County’s strategic initiatives. The Vision Behind the Project
Kendal Powellowner of The Battery indoor hitting facility, has been a vocal supporter of the project since its early stages. He points out that the lack of available space in Tallahassee was a driving factor behind the project. The Battery was established to address the need for indoor hitting facilities for girlsand Northeast Park aims to fill a similar gap for outdoor sports.
Powell hopes to bring his nonprofit, Touching Base, to the new park. The organization provides free softball clinics to athletes in underserved areas. Running clinics and partnering with the county for field access are key goals for Powell, who sees the park as an opportunity to engage and Support Local youth.
The Northeast Park project represents a significant investment in the future of Tallahassee.
