The southern Philippines was jolted by a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Monday, June 8, 2026resulting in at least 19 fatalities and injuring more than 200 people. The quake, centered off the coast of Mindanao islandtriggered a 1-meter tsunami that affected nearby coastal areas.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the quake’s epicenter was located about 32 kilometers southwest of Maasim town in Sarangani provinceat a depth of 33 kilometers. The tremor was felt as far as Malaysia’s Sabah state and even reached southern Japanhighlighting the extensive reach of the seismic event.
The Impact on General Santos
The port city of General Santoshome to over 700,000 peoplewas one of the hardest-hit areas. The city, known as a hub for the tuna export industryexperienced significant damage to infrastructure and buildings. Rod Sosmeñaregional director of the Office of Civil Defensedescribed the shaking as very strongcausing people to rush out of their homes in panic.
Among the casualties were seven people in General Santos, where several small buildings collapsed, including a popular hamburger joint. The international airport in General Santos was temporarily shut down, and 17 domestic flights were canceled, disrupting travel plans and emergency response efforts.
Tsunami Warnings and Aftershocks
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued a tsunami warning shortly after the quake, which was lifted about five hours later as the threat subsided. However, the initial waves caused damage to six shanties on stilts in a coastal village in Zamboanga del Sur.
Aftershocks as strong as 6.5 magnitude were recorded, raising concerns about further damage and casualties. Teresito Bacolcoldirector of PHIVOLCS, urged residents to seek advice before returning to damaged buildings, warning of the risk of collapse due to aftershocks.
Response and Recovery Efforts
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. swiftly responded to the crisis, ordering the cancellation of classes and directing disaster-response agencies to immediately assist the affected provinces. He assured the public that the national government is moving and we will not leave Mindanao behind.
The Philippine Red Cross and other rescue teams were deployed to assess the damage and provide aid to the affected areas. Search and rescue efforts were underway in damaged buildings and warehouses in General Santos, with reports of students being trapped in a collapsed two-story school.
Public schools had reopened nationwide after the summer vacation from April to Maybut the earthquake disrupted the first day back. More than 100 students attending morning flag-raising ceremonies in the southern region sustained bruises and some fainted in panic.
