The University of Florida’s journey to appoint a new president has encountered another obstacle. Despite the unanimous approval of Stuart Bell by the university’s board, the chairman of the Board of Governors has raised concerns about governance issues at UF, delaying Bell’s confirmation.
In a letter dated May 20, Board of Governors Chairman Alan Levine expressed his apprehensions to State University System Chancellor Ray Rodrigues. Levine highlighted the sweeping authority granted to UF’s Board of Trustees chairman, Mori Hosseini, which he deemed problematic and inconsistent with best practices in governance. Levine stated that he would not put any item on the agenda from a university that is ‘out of compliance.’
Governance Concerns and Unfair Delay
Levine alleged that Hosseini had been granted financial, contractual, and other delegations that run afoul of state regulations. ‘One board member may not substitute his or her judgment for that of the other duly appointed board members,’ Levine wrote. In response, UF’s board plans to name Bell as an interim president until Levine’s concerns are resolved, said Rahul Patel, vice chair of UF’s board.
Patel criticized Levine’s move as ‘unfair,’ stating that Bell’s candidacy is being dragged into a dispute ‘unrelated to his candidacy.’ Patel emphasized that a decision of this magnitude should be made by the full Board of Governors, not by a single individual acting alone. UF’s board will meet to address the issue and continue moving forward.
The Turbulent Search for UF’s Next President
Last week, Bell was confirmed as the next UF president after a volatile two-year search. The university’s first choice in 2026, former University of Michigan president Santa Ono, was approved by UF’s board of trustees but was later rejected by the BOG with a 10-6 vote. BOG members questioned Ono’s avowed reversal on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, which he embraced at UM when he was president.
Bell has faced similar criticism from online activists, who claim he backed DEI initiatives during his 10-year tenure as president of the University of Alabama. However, Bell assured the UF board that he would not enact DEI programs as president. ‘Let me be clear. I am not coming to Florida to bring DEI or ‘woke’ back, period,’ he said.
Bell’s Academic Background
Before serving as president of the University of Alabama, Bell held prominent positions at Louisiana State University and the University of Kansas. His extensive experience in academia has prepared him for the challenges ahead at the University of Florida.
The Path Forward
The delay in Bell’s confirmation is the latest setback in UF’s turbulent search for a permanent president. This is UF’s fourth presidential search in five years. The Board of Governors has suggested calling a special meeting to vote on Bell’s nomination once the governance issues are resolved. In the meantime, UF’s Board of Trustees will consider naming Bell interim president to allow the university to move forward.
The outcome of this situation remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the University of Florida is navigating a complex landscape in its quest for new leadership.
