The Florida State University Board of Trustees has given the green light to a $3.22 billion operating budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year representing a 4.5% increase over the previous year’s spending plan. This substantial budget is set to fuel student aid initiativescutting-edge research and campus infrastructure improvements.

President Richard McCullough expressed enthusiasm about the budget, stating, “This year’s budget positions Florida State University to move strategic priorities forward and build on our momentum as one of the top public universities in the nation.” The budget is designed to expand opportunities for studentsattract and retain top faculty and staff and strengthen FSU’s impact across Florida.

Investing in Student Success and Affordability

The approved budget allocates over $300 million for financial aid ensuring that nearly 9 out of 10 full-time undergraduate students receive some form of non-loan financial assistance. This commitment to affordability is part of a 13-year stretch of frozen in-state tuition rates for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Kyle Clark, Senior Vice President for Finance & Administration, highlighted the significance of the budget increase, noting, “We had the largest increase out of anyone in the state university system, both in terms of operating dollars and in terms of capital dollars. It’s up by around $138 million which is 4 1/2% over last year.”

Capital Projects and Campus Development

The budget includes $455 million for capital projects with a significant portion dedicated to the FSU Health Research Centerstudent housing and infrastructure improvements. One of the major housing investments is the Northwest campus project which includes 1,200 beds1,000 parking spots and a dining hall accommodating 800 people at one time. Clark mentioned, “we’ve already broken ground on that project.”

Pending final approval from Governor Ron DeSantis, the budget also includes funding for an additional building at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. This investment is part of a broader effort to enhance the university’s academic and research initiatives.

Economic Impact and State Support

Florida State University estimates that its operations generate more than $15 billion annually in economic impact across Florida. This impact includes $5.6 billion in direct revenue or sales, $184 million in spending by non-resident students, and $9.5 billion in projected lifetime earnings by recent graduates.

The budget relies on state appropriations, which account for approximately 40% of the university’s annual budget. The Florida legislature has appropriated funding for several FSU-based centers and projects, including the Florida Institute for Child Welfare the Institute for Governance and Civics and the Florida Institute for Pediatric Rare Diseases.
