In a significant boost to his gubernatorial campaign, Florida Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins has secured the endorsements of Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells and the Hernando County Professional Firefighters. These endorsements come as Collins prepares to succeed Governor Ron DeSantis in the upcoming primary election, highlighting his growing support among law enforcement and first responder communities.
The endorsements underscore Collins’ commitment to law and order and his alignment with the current administration’s policies. As he seeks to position Florida as a leader in conservative governance, these backing from prominent figures in public safety are crucial.
Law Enforcement Backing
Sheriff Wells, who has served Manatee County for over four decades, including 21 years with the Florida Highway Patrol and as the Palmetto Police Chief expressed his support for Collins. “Under the leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis and Lt. Governor Collins, Florida has grown to be a national leader in many realms, including law enforcement,” Wells stated. “Crime is down and quality of life is up because leaders like Jay have fought to keep Florida a law-and-order state.”
This endorsement marks the ninth time a Florida sheriff has backed Collins’ campaign. He has also received support from the sheriffs of Marion, Santa Rosa, Volusia, Osceola, Hardee, Taylor, Nassau, and Levy counties, as well as the Volusia County Deputies Association. Collins expressed his gratitude for Wells’ endorsement on social media, acknowledging the sheriff’s extensive experience and dedication to Florida families.
Firefighter Support
The Hernando County Professional Firefighters affiliated with the International Association of Firefighters Local 3760 have also thrown their support behind Collins. Local 3760 President Jason Haas highlighted Collins’ background as a 23-year combat veteran of the U.S. Army Special Forces noting that his experience has shaped a leader who understands service, sacrifice, and accountability.
“As a Green Beret, you understand what it means to stand on the front lines, make life-or-death decisions in seconds, and lead others through the most challenging circumstances,” Haas said. Collins, in accepting the endorsement, emphasized his “law and order” platform and his collaboration with governor desantis to advance conservative policies in Florida.
Campaign Momentum
Collins, who was appointed lieutenant governor by DeSantis, continues to build a robust network of institutional support from conservative leaders and public safety organizations across the state. His campaign has been marked by a strong focus on public safety and conservative values, resonating with key constituencies ahead of the primary election.
“Florida has made incredible progress and I’m proud to have fought with Governor DeSantis to make Florida the conservative proving grounds of America,” Collins stated. “In Florida, we protect our people, and we don’t coddle criminals.” These endorsements further solidify his position as a formidable candidate in the upcoming election.
