The recent earthquakes that struck Venezuela have left a trail of destruction, prompting an outpouring of support from South florida. The Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) in Doral is at the forefront of these efforts, coordinating the collection and distribution of essential supplies.
With 40,000 pounds of aid already dispatched to Venezuela and an additional 82,000 pounds en route, the community’s response has been nothing short of remarkable. The GEM warehouse in Doral has seen a steady stream of donors bringing in canned food, diapers, and medicine among other necessities.
Logistics and Distribution Efforts
Billy Richardson, GEM’s logistics director highlighted the organization’s strategic approach to aid distribution. ‘We are working with one of the bigger distributors in Venezuela to ensure that the aid reaches those in need efficiently,’ Richardson explained. The plan involves utilizing trucks and other vehicles to transport supplies to various distribution points across the country.
Richardson also emphasized the importance of donating the right items. ‘We are asking people to avoid donating water, as it is not currently in short supply, as well as sodas and high fructose juices,’ he noted. This targeted approach ensures that the most needed items are prioritized.
The Power of Community Support
The response from South Floridians has been overwhelming. Richardson described the community’s involvement as ‘absolutely incredible.’ ‘South Florida and the Venezuelan community have all come out and really supported this cause,’ he said. ‘We’ve had well over 2,500 volunteers in the last few days, which is incredible. It’s amazing.’
The GEM warehouse in Caracas is already operational, and the organization plans to send at least two flights with additional supplies in the coming days. This coordinated effort aims to provide immediate relief and support to the affected regions.
