The eastern and central Caribbean are currently experiencing hot and dry conditions due to millions of dust particles suspended in the atmosphere. These particles, originating from the Sahara Desert in Africa, have traveled thousands of miles and are expected to reach Florida this week. This could be the first significant Saharan dust plume of the season for the state.
The dust is transported by the Saharan Air Layer a hot and dry air mass that typically resides between 5,000 and 20,000 feet above the surface. This phenomenon has been tracked by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for about 20 years. On average, a new plume arrives in the Western Hemisphere about once a week or every other week, with varying density.
The Impact of Saharan Dust on Florida’s Weather
As the dust arrives in Florida, it is expected to reduce the chances of rain and thunderstorms, particularly in South florida starting Wednesday and Central Florida by Thursday. With fewer chances of rain, temperatures could soar to the mid- to upper-90s, and with the humidity, it could feel as hot as 110 degrees. Hazy conditions are also expected in Northeast Florida on Thursday and Friday.
The dust particles absorb sunlight during the day, warming the atmosphere while also reducing radiational cooling at night. This can lead to higher overnight lows and warmer mornings. Additionally, the suppression of afternoon thunderstorms means less natural cooling, allowing the atmosphere to heat up even more.
The Drawbacks of Saharan Dust
While the dust is high in the atmosphere, it generally does not cause issues. However, some particles eventually settle closer to the surface, where they can cause respiratory issues. Saharan dust can irritate the eyes, ears, nose, and throat. People with allergies or respiratory conditions such as asthma or chronic bronchitis should consider staying indoors when dust concentrations are high and take any prescribed or recommended allergy medications.
Another drawback is the potential for harmful algal blooms. The same nutrients that replenish the Amazon rainforest and nourish Caribbean beaches can also settle into the ocean. Along Florida’s Gulf Coast, these nutrients can feed algae that contribute to harmful algal blooms, including red tide.
The Benefits of Saharan Dust
Despite the drawbacks, Saharan dust also has several benefits. One major advantage is that it suppresses tropical development. Strong, well-organized storms can often overcome the dry, dusty air, but weaker or poorly organized systems typically struggle to survive in the presence of Saharan dust.
The dust also delivers essential nutrients, including phosphorus, to the Amazon rainforest. These minerals, carried thousands of miles across the Atlantic, support plant growth on land and phytoplankton growth in the ocean, making them an important part of healthy marine ecosystems.
Finally, hazy skies filled with Saharan dust often produce spectacular sunrises and sunsets that can last for several weeks. So, while the weather may be hotter during these dust events, be sure to take a moment to enjoy the extra-vibrant colors at sunrise or sunset.
