On July 14, Leon County Government and the Council of Neighborhood Associations (CONA) came together to celebrate the 45th Annual Neighborhood Recognition Program. This esteemed event highlighted the remarkable achievements of neighborhoods and individuals who have gone above and beyond to enhance the quality of life in Leon County.
The program serves as a testament to the power of community engagement and the positive impact it can have on local neighborhoods. This year’s winners demonstrated exceptional dedication to service, leadership, and collaboration, setting a high standard for community involvement.
Outstanding Neighborhoods Recognized for Their Contributions
Three neighborhoods were honored for their outstanding contributions to the community. Each winner exemplified excellence in different categories, showcasing the diverse ways neighborhoods can make a significant impact.
Small Neighborhood of the Year: Avondale Neighborhood Association
The Avondale Neighborhood Association was named the Small Neighborhood of the Year for communities with 200 homes or fewer. This vibrant neighborhood has shown a strong commitment to resident engagement, using community feedback to guide meaningful improvements. Avondale’s annual events and traditions have fostered a connected and lively community spirit.
Large Neighborhood of the Year: Griffin Heights Neighborhood Association
Griffin Heights Neighborhood Association received the Large Neighborhood of the Year award for communities with more than 200 homes. Known for its exemplary community leadership, Griffin Heights has implemented initiatives that enhance neighborhood pride, improve quality of life, and support sustainable revitalization and economic opportunity.
Unincorporated Neighborhood of the Year: Highgrove Homeowners Association
The Highgrove Homeowners Association was recognized as the Unincorporated Neighborhood of the Year for its exceptional community stewardship. Highgrove has invested in infrastructure improvements, advanced sustainable practices, and fostered a welcoming, connected community through resident engagement and service initiatives.
Neighbor of the Year: Michelle Olson
Michelle Olson was honored as the Neighbor of the Year for her selfless service, compassionate leadership, and unwavering commitment to her neighbors. Since joining her neighborhood just one year ago, Michelle has made a lasting impact through her volunteer work, neighborhood initiatives, and efforts to enhance the quality of life for all residents.
Michelle’s dedication is evident in her efforts to improve shared spaces, help neighbors in need, and foster connections within the community. Her contributions have made her neighborhood a better place to live, setting an example for others to follow.
Celebrating Community Impact and Partnerships
Leon county commission Chairman Christian Caban expressed pride in recognizing the dedicated residents and neighborhoods that strengthen the community. “From beautification projects to volunteerism and civic engagement, these efforts create lasting benefits for residents throughout our county,” he said.
County Administrator Vincent S. Long highlighted the long-standing tradition of the Neighborhood Recognition Program. “For 45 years, Leon County has recognized the extraordinary contributions of our neighborhoods, whose dedication continues to enrich communities and create lasting impact across our county,” he stated.
Leroy Peck of CONA emphasized the importance of resident collaboration. “Leon County neighborhoods are strongest when residents come together with a shared commitment to improving the places they call home. CONA is proud to partner with Leon County in celebrating the neighborhood organizations whose dedication strengthens neighborhoods and builds a stronger community,” he added.
The Neighborhood of the Year Award winners received a sign to display at their neighborhood entrances, while the Neighbor of the Year Award winner received a personalized plaque highlighting their leadership and service to the community.
