The U.S. military has paid tribute to a courageous soldier who lost his life in the line of duty. Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton a 30-year-old from Fayetteville, North Carolina was killed on Sunday while attempting to disarm an Iranian drone at an air base in Irbil, northern Iraq.
The incident occurred during a controlled detonation procedure, and the military is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. Swinton’s bravery and dedication have earned him the Bronze StarPurple Heart and Combat Action Badge and he will be posthumously promoted to the rank of staff sergeant.

Swinton, who enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2017, was a member of the 55th Air Defense Artillery Regiment part of the 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His wife, Mia Gonzalez-Swinton shared her heartbreak on social media, revealing that she was informed of his death on Sunday. The couple has a young daughter.
In a poignant Facebook post on Monday, Mia expressed her devastation, writing, “I will never recover from this, you should be home. We had so many plans for when you got back, I’m sick to my stomach.” Her words capture the profound impact of his loss on his family and loved ones.
A Hero Remembered
Brig. Gen. John L. Dawber commanding general of the Army Air and Missile Defense Command praised Swinton’s character and dedication. “Sgt. Swinton was an experienced noncommissioned officer who took great pride in his work and the people around him” Dawber stated. “He answered the call to duty with courage, honor, and selfless dedication.“
Swinton’s sacrifice comes amid heightened tensions in the region. Just days earlier, on Friday, two other U.S. Army soldiers were killed in Jordan while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. These incidents mark the first U.S. troop deaths from direct Iranian fire since the opening days of the war.
