King’s sister, Porsche Knight shared the significance of the scholarship during the 15th annual fundraiser. “We’ve been doing this for 15 years in honor of my brother, who made the ultimate sacrifice back in 2010 in Afghanistan at the age of 23 years old,” she said. “We are celebrating his life every year, and we are so excited to be able to do that by being able to give out scholarships.”

The scholarship has become a beacon of hope for students like Lilah Swanton who traveled from Tampa to participate in the celebration. For Swanton, the scholarship represents more than just financial support; it is an opportunity to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. “Where I’m from, it’s kind of expected that you’re going to go to college, but I have a single mom, so I never really knew how that was going to happen or how I was going to do it,” she explained. “Scholarships like this give me the opportunity to go to college and do what’s expected of me.”
