The Titusville Police Department has filed new charges against a local resident in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on February 14. The case, which initially left the community on edge, has seen significant developments following a thorough investigation.

The suspect, Dwayne Mitchell a 42-year-old Titusville resident, was charged on August 18 after detectives pieced together evidence from the February 14 shooting on Buttonwood Drive. The incident, which took place in the early hours of the morning, involved multiple gunshots fired in a residential area.

The Incident and Initial Investigation

At approximately 5:30 a.m. officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 3000 block of Buttonwood Drive. A resident who was preparing to leave for work reported hearing shots and took cover by raising a backpack over their head. Upon retreating towards their home, the resident discovered a bullet hole in the backpack. Miraculously, the individual was unharmed.

Investigators documented extensive damage from the gunfire, including bullet holes in a garage, a parked vehicle, and a tree in the yard. They also recovered 16 shell casings and personal items belonging to Mitchell, as well as an additional firearm at the scene. Forensic testing later identified Mitchell’s DNA on the recovered firearm.

The Arrest and Forensic Link

Mitchell was initially arrested on June 16 on charges unrelated to the shooting. During that arrest, a firearm was found in his possession. Subsequent forensic analysis linked this firearm to the shell casings recovered from the Buttonwood Drive shooting scene. This connection provided the critical evidence needed to file additional charges against Mitchell.

The new charges include aggravated assault with a firearmpossession of a firearm or ammunition by a convicted felon and shooting or throwing a deadly missile into a dwelling. These charges are being held without bond, reflecting the serious nature of the offenses.

Community Impact and Ongoing Investigation

Sgt. Lauren Watson of the Titusville Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Section emphasized the importance of the investigation in ensuring community safety. “This arrest is the result of hard work, dedication, and persistence of our officers, detectives, and staff,” Watson stated. “We remain committed to following the evidence and holding those responsible accountable to keep our community safe.”
