In the heated race to replace term-limited Governor Ron DeSantis, U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds has emerged as a formidable force, raising an impressive $14 million in just two months. This substantial sum places him far ahead of both Republican and Democratic rivals, setting the stage for a competitive election season.
With $65.8 million cash on hand as of June 1, Donalds’ campaign is well-positioned to dominate the political landscape. His rivals, including Lt. Gov. Jay Collins and former House Speaker Paul Renner, are struggling to keep pace with his fundraising prowess.
Donalds’ Fundraising Surge and Policy Vision
Donalds’ campaign has not only focused on fundraising but also on outlining a comprehensive vision for Florida’s future. He has emphasized affordabilityhousingtaxeseducationand immigration as key areas of his governance plan.
One of his top priorities is tackling the rising cost of living, particularly in insurance and housing. Donalds praised Governor DeSantis for implementing tort reforms that have lowered auto insurance rates and pledged to further reform property insurance regulations that have been in place for over two decades.
Housing affordability is another major focus. Donalds argued that government permitting requirements significantly contribute to rising home prices, estimating that permitting costs can account for roughly 30% of the cost of building a new home. He proposed reducing regulatory burdens to make homeownership more attainable.
Tax Relief and Economic Policies
Donalds also voiced support for property tax relief, noting that many homeowners have seen their property tax bills increase substantially in recent years. He backed Governor DeSantis’ proposal to expand Florida’s homestead exemption and pledged to continue exploring ways to reduce or potentially eliminate property taxes on primary residences.
“If it doesn’t pass, under my administration we’re going to have our Tax and Budget Commission bring this back,” Donalds said. “We are going to study all taxes and fees in the state of Florida.”
He added that any future tax relief efforts would focus heavily on helping seniors living on fixed incomes and younger families trying to purchase homes.
The Competitive Landscape
While Donalds leads in fundraising and polls, his rivals are not without resources. Lt. Gov. Jay Collins received a $5 million boost from Propel Florida LLC, bringing his total campaign funds to nearly $6 million. Former House Speaker Paul Renner raised $105,000 in the last two months, with nearly $3.2 million cash on hand.
On the Democratic side, the field has narrowed significantly. Former U.S. Rep. David Jolly is now the sole major candidate after Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings withdrew due to a prostate cancer diagnosis. Jolly raised $1.2 million in April and May but has spent much of his $6 million war chest, leaving him with $2 million cash on hand.
Jolly recently named former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham as his running mate, a strategic move typically reserved for after the primary. This decision underscores the shifting dynamics in the race as the general election approaches.
Polling Data and Public Support
A recent poll from the Associated Industries of Florida shows Donalds holding a commanding lead in the Republican Primary, with 54% support in a four-way field. This lead is 46 points ahead of his nearest competitor, James Fishback, who garnered 8% support. Lt. Gov. Jay Collins and former House Speaker Paul Renner trailed with 5% and 2% respectively.
Donalds’ support is broad geographically, with strong showings in Fort Myers, West Palm Beach, Orlando, the Panhandle, and Tampa. He also draws significant support among white and Hispanic Republicans, as well as seniors, who are typically the highest-propensity primary voters.
“Byron Donalds is dominating the Republican Primary race for Florida Governor,” said Jeremy Sheftel, AIF vice president of Political Operations. “With a commanding $81 million war chest, an extensive campaign and field apparatus, and a complete and total endorsement from President Donald J. Trump, Donalds is in an extremely advantageous position to be Florida’s Republican nominee for Governor.”
The primary election is scheduled for August 18, with the general election following on November 3. As the race intensifies, Donalds’ substantial fundraising and clear policy vision position him as a strong contender to succeed Governor DeSantis.
