The University of Florida has a new leader at the helm. After weeks of controversy and a lengthy selection process, the Florida Board of Governors confirmed Stuart Bell as the 14th president of the institution. The decision, made during a special meeting at the University of south florida on a Wednesday morning, marks the end of a period of instability for UF, which has seen three different presidents in as many years.
Bell, who previously served as the president of the University of Alabama, succeeds Donald Landry who had been serving as interim president. His appointment comes after the Board of Governors rejected the university’s previous choice, Santa Ono due to concerns over diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.
Bell’s vision and priorities for UF
In his opening remarks, Bell pledged to serve with integrityhumility and accountability. He expressed his readiness to tackle the challenges ahead, stating, “I’m ready to get to work.” One of his immediate priorities will be filling vacant leadership roles and launching a search for a permanent provost within his first 100 days in office.
During the confirmation hearing, Bell addressed concerns about his stance on DEI, assuring the board that he was “not coming to Florida to bring back DEI, or woke, in any fashion.” He also highlighted his achievements at the University of Alabama, including improved retention and graduation rates, as well as growth in research funding.
The road to confirmation
The path to Bell’s confirmation was not without its obstacles. The initial vote, scheduled for the previous week, was delayed due to governance concerns raised by Board of Governors Chair Alan Levine. In a letter to State University System Chancellor Ray Rodrigues Levine questioned the delegation of authority to UF Board of Trustees Chair Mori Hosseini citing potential inconsistencies with state regulations.
The delay led to an explosive meeting between Levine and Hosseini, with other board members expressing their disappointment and sadness over the controversy. Despite the rocky start, the board ultimately voted in favor of Bell’s appointment, with only one member, Aubrey Edge dissenting.
A new chapter for UF
Bell’s tenure as president will last through June 30, 2031, with an annual base salary of $2 million and the potential for a 3% merit increase each year. His inauguration is set to take place later this year, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the University of Florida.
As Bell takes the reins, he inherits an institution with remarkable momentum and limitless opportunity. With his vast experience and steady hand, he aims to guide UF to become one of the top three public universities in the nation, as outlined by the UF Board of Trustees’ vision.
