The recent flash floods in Nepal and Tibet have left a trail of destruction, with rescue teams scrambling to find survivors. The floods, triggered by a glacial collapse in the Himalayan region, have caused widespread devastation, leaving at least 903 people dead in Nepal and 16 in Tibet. The search for the missing continues, with 4,247 people unaccounted for in Nepal and 546 in Tibet.
The floods have also disrupted critical infrastructure, including hydroelectric plants and major highways. The Pasang Lhamu highway a vital link between Rasuwa district and Nuwakot district has been severely damaged, hampering rescue efforts. The Trishuli river swollen by the floods, has washed away large sections of the highway, leaving entire areas cut off.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Rescue teams, including military and private helicopters, are working around the clock to reach stranded individuals. Brig. Gen. Raja Ram Basnet Nepal’s army spokesman, stated, “We are working in search and rescue of the stranded people from hills, settlements and river areas.” The efforts are focused on locating workers trapped in hydroelectric plant tunnels, with hundreds still missing.
In China rescue and recovery efforts are also in full swing. The road leading to Gyirong Port at the border between China and Nepal is being repaved, with trucks carrying giant rocks to rebuild the damaged section. The road is now under 2 to 3 meters of water, making it difficult for rescuers to reach the border. Chinese state media has highlighted the deployment of firefighters and the People’s Liberation Army in the rescue operations.
The Human Toll
The floods have taken a significant human toll, with families mourning the loss of loved ones. In Chitwan, Nepal relatives consoled Muna Khadka who lost her son Aayush Khada in the floods. The mass burials highlight the scale of the tragedy, with hundreds of lives lost in a matter of days.
The floods were triggered by a glacial collapse high in the Himalayan region. Scientists studying satellite images reported that bedrock underneath a glacier had collapsed, taking part of the glacier with it. The rockfall was so extreme that it registered as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event. The resulting torrent of water and debris swept through valleys, causing widespread destruction in Tibet and Nepal.

Multiple foreign teams are assisting local rescuers in their efforts to find survivors. The international community has rallied to support the affected regions, with rescue teams from various countries joining the search and recovery operations.
