The Tallahassee Police Department has made an arrest in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred in a parking garage on May 24. Jeray Ellis Jr., an 18-year-old resident, was taken into custody on charges of first-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.

The incident, which took place at the parking garage located at 411 Chapel Drive, involved multiple groups gathered for an unsanctioned pop-up party. The shooting resulted in the death of 18-year-old Gavin Yates-Lyons and injuries to two other individuals.

The Shooting and Its Aftermath

According to police reports, the shooting began just before 5 a.m. Officers responded to the area of Chapel Drive and Call Street after hearing gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered evidence of a shooting across several floors of the parking garage.

Yates-Lyons, who had just arrived at the garage when the shooting started, was struck by gunfire while attempting to leave the area. He succumbed to his injuries six days later, on May 30. The other two victims were treated and released from the hospital.

The Investigation and Arrest

The investigation into the shooting was extensive, involving the review of physical and digital evidence and numerous interviews. police chief Lawrence Revell emphasized the importance of patience, persistence, and attention to detail in cases of this nature.

“This arrest is the result of months of diligent investigative work and our detectives’ commitment to finding answers for the victims and their families,” Revell stated. “While an arrest cannot undo the loss experienced by a family, we hope it represents an important step toward justice and accountability.”

Ellis was arrested following the investigation, which revealed that he believed the vehicle Yates-Lyons was in was occupied by the person he was targeting. The investigation remains active, and police are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.

Yates-Lyons was a recent graduate of Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia, and had plans to attend Ball State University to play football. His untimely death has left a void in the lives of his family, friends, and the broader community.

“Gavin excelled as a football player and was known for his respectful nature, kind heart, and deep love for his family and friends,” according to an online fundraiser set up on behalf of his family. The outpouring of support and condolences highlights the profound effect Yates-Lyons had on those around him.
