The third day of the vessel homicide trial of South Florida real estate developer George Pino unfolded with emotional testimonies and critical evidence. The trial, centered around a tragic Labor Day weekend accident in 2026, saw the prosecution and defense present their cases with intense scrutiny.
The accident, which occurred near Boca Chita Keyresulted in the death of 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez and serious injuries to two other teenagers. Pino, who was operating a 29-foot boat, is accused of striking a channel marker at nearly 50 mph, leading to the fatal incident.
Cecilia Pino’s Defiant Testimony
Cecilia Pinothe wife of the defendant, took the stand on Wednesday, providing a brief but defiant testimony. When asked if Fernandez died because Pino crashed into the channel marker, Cecilia Pino responded, “Right, she died because there was an accident.” She admitted to not looking when the boat struck the marker, as she was focused on her phone, attempting to send a video of the girls dancing to their mothers.
Cecilia Pino also revealed that she had consumed an insulated Yeti cup filled with sparkling wine and a berry liqueur. However, she was not asked about her husband’s alcohol consumption on the day of the crash. The testimony provided a glimpse into the chaotic moments leading up to the accident and the immediate aftermath.
First Responders’ Accounts
The jury watched body camera footage from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials who first responded to the scene. The video showed the chaotic situation as first responders attempted to help the injured teens. Brutto recounted seeing Pino and two girls on a good Samaritan’s boat who needed immediate medical attention. He also mentioned transporting Fernandez, who was pulled from beneath Pino’s vessel, to a harbor where she was airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital. The testimony highlighted the difficulties faced by first responders in providing medical aid amidst the chaos.
Prosecutors’ Key Questions
Prosecutor Laura Adams questioned Brutto about the differences between his actions and Pino’s. Adams pointed out that Brutto did not have emergency lights activated, teenagers who had been drinking on his boat, or consume alcohol during his shift.
