The Polk County community is in shock following the tragic death of a dedicated detention deputy in a late-night crash on Interstate 4. Jonathan Morales Pabon, 32, was off-duty when the accident occurred, leaving his colleagues and loved ones devastated.
The incident, which took place around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, has sparked an ongoing investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Investigations Unit.
The Night of the Tragedy
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Morales Pabon was a front passenger in a Nissan SUV driven by a 21-year-old woman from Lake Wales. The vehicle was traveling eastbound on I-4 near the U.S. Highway 27 overpass when the driver suddenly braked and attempted to exit the interstate quickly.
The SUV weaved into the path of an eastbound Ford pickup truck in the far-right lane. The impact caused Morales Pabon to slide into the back of the SUV, where he suffered a fatal head injury. The driver of the Nissan sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital, while the driver of the Ford truck, a 38-year-old man from Orlando, remained unharmed.
A Life of Service
Morales Pabon, originally from New York City, had a long history of public service. He began his career as a corrections officer with the Florida Department of Corrections in. In, he joined the Polk County Sheriff’s Office as a detention deputy and was assigned to the South county jail in Frostproof.
In addition to his law enforcement career, Morales Pabon was an educated professional. He earned an associate degree in HVAC from the Technical Career Institute in New York, demonstrating his commitment to continuous learning and personal growth.
Community Mourns a Fallen Hero
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd expressed the community’s grief in a heartfelt statement. “We are all grieving at the loss of this great young deputy who has well and faithfully served with our agency for the past five years, and was a public servant for several years prior to that. He will be greatly missed. Please keep his family in your prayers,” Judd said.
