Alas was communicating with a decoy on the dating app Grindr, where he arranged to meet the purported minor. The decoy was part of the social media group 561 Predator Catcherswhich conducts online stings targeting individuals accused of trying to meet minors for sex.
Alas arrived at the meeting location in a black Toyota Camry with a Mississippi tag. During the investigation, he admitted to knowing that the person he was communicating with was between 14 and 15 years old. He also confessed to using a translator app during their conversation. Alas was charged with traveling to meet a minor for an unlawful sex act and using a two-way device to facilitate a felony.
