The city of St. Petersburg is grappling with the aftermath of a tragic incident that unfolded on Sunday morning. A man lost his life during an officer-involved shooting at a residence on Pershing Street Northeast. The incident began when Kerry Sedlock reached out to the St. Petersburg Police Department for assistance with his brother, Kasey Sedlock, who was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis. According to Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, the St. Petersburg Police Department received a call at approximately 11:20 a.m. on Sunday. Kerry Sedlock had contacted authorities after attempting to manage his brother’s erratic behavior and suicidal intentions on his own.
Gualtieri described the situation as a really sad situation highlighting Kasey Sedlock’s history of mental health issues, drug abuse, and previous attempts at self-harm. Kerry had initially tried to disarm his brother, placing a knife in a Chevrolet pickup truck in the driveway. However, Kasey’s continued erratic behavior necessitated police intervention.
The Critical Moments
Upon arrival, officers were informed that Kasey was inside the home and still acting erratically. As they entered the residence, they encountered Kasey standing at the end of a hallway, holding the knife. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation using less-lethal force, deploying a Taser. Kasey fell to the ground, but the knife remained within his reach.
Despite repeated attempts to subdue Kasey with a Taser, the situation escalated. Kasey continued to reach for the knife, prompting officers to take further action. In a critical moment, one officer fired four shots, striking Kasey. He was subsequently transported to HCA Florida Northside Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 12:20 p.m.

The officer involved in the shooting has not yet been identified, as a new Florida law prohibits the release of the officer’s name for the first 72 hours. The investigation is being conducted by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office under the Pinellas County Use of Deadly Force Task Force protocol.
