Marathon: Knife-wielding woman threatens deputies
On July 6, 2026, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Sombrero Beach Road. A citizen reported that a woman, later identified as 35-year-old Jennifer Lynn Secrest, was armed with a knife and harassing him. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Secrest, who was reportedly intoxicated and waving a knife while making threats.
The situation escalated as Secrest repeatedly dropped the knife only to pick it back up and continue threatening the officers. Deputies had to find an opening to safely separate her from the weapon. No injuries were reported during the encounter. Secrest was transported to a local jail facility and formally charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officerresisting arrest and disorderly intoxication.
Tampa: Man armed with knives arrested after restaurant fire
In a separate incident, a man armed with knives was arrested after deputies found him inside a burning Tampa restaurant. The Hillsborough county Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) responded around 8:45 a.m. to a business on West Waters Avenue after receiving reports of a possible assault or battery in progress.
Upon arrival, officials found smoke and flames pouring from the restaurant, with a propane tank outside the building also caught fire. Deputies spotted 53-year-old Rubiel Maceo Castillo inside the restaurant holding two knives and ordered him to drop the weapons and come outside. Working with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue crews, deputies helped contain the fire before taking Castillo into custody.
Castillo is now facing several charges, including first-degree arson of an occupied structure. No injuries have been reported in this incident.
