The Florida Panhandle is in the grip of a tense manhunt following the discovery of a man’s body buried in a shallow grave. The case has taken a dramatic turn with five arrests made, yet the primary suspect, Isabelle Johnson, remains at large. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office has been diligently piecing together the events leading to the murder of Jason Christopher Coulthart, 43, whose remains were found on a property off Sunset Lane in Freeport.
The investigation, which began after Coulthart was reported missing on May 24, took a significant step forward on June 25 when detectives acted on a tip about the burial site. A search warrant executed that day revealed the grim discovery. Forensic analysis confirmed the identity of the remains as Coulthart, who was last seen leaving the College Condominiums on East College Boulevard.
The Arrests and Charges
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office has made significant progress in the case, arresting five individuals connected to the homicide. Michael Ray White, 74, and Kathleen Morris, 59, of Santa Rosa Beach, were taken into custody on July 10. Both face charges of accessory to a capital felony after the fact and obstruction. Investigators allege that White provided shelter and supplies to Johnson between June 25 and June 30, aiding her evasion of law enforcement.
Morris, who resides at the same address as White, admitted to transporting Johnson, supplying her with necessities, and providing false information to deputies. Authorities uncovered incriminating text messages from her cellphone, which played a crucial role in the investigation. Additionally, Martin and Sandra Leaverton of Fort Walton Beach were arrested for their alleged involvement in sheltering Johnson and attempting to secure her escape out of state. They are currently held at the Walton County Jail on charges of accessory after the fact to capital murder.
Bobbi Wagstaff, 31, of Sunset Lane, was also arrested and charged with accessory to capital murder after the fact and possession of methamphetamine. Sheriff Michael Adkinson emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that anyone aiding Johnson’s evasion would face severe consequences. “This is a homicide case. We will not allow anyone to get in the way of this investigation,” Adkinson asserted.
The Elusive Suspect
The primary focus of the investigation remains on Isabelle Johnson, 38, who is wanted on an open count of murder. Authorities describe her as a dangerous individual actively evading law enforcement. Johnson is believed to be using multiple aliases, including Harley, Jessica Elaine Bowman, Jessica Elaine Thrush, and Jessica Dowdy, among others. Her relationship with Coulthart has not been disclosed, adding another layer of mystery to the case.
Surveillance footage captured Johnson inside a business days after Coulthart’s remains were discovered. Authorities warn that she may have altered her appearance since then. Johnson is described as a white woman, 5-foot-3, and 120 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes.
