A tragic incident unfolded in Pasco County early Sunday morning, resulting in the death of a 15-year-old passenger after a high-speed chase ended in a crash. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision that occurred around 3:45 a.m. on State Road 54, just outside of New Port Richey.
The incident began when a state trooper observed a Chevy Traverse traveling at 74 mph in a 45 mph zone. The trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver, a 15-year-old boy, refused to comply and accelerated to speeds of up to 115 mph while fleeing from the trooper.
The PIT maneuver and the fatal crash
East of Old County Road 54, the trooper executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver a tactic used to safely stop a fleeing vehicle. The maneuver caused the Chevy to rotate onto the south shoulder of the highway, where it collided with a utility pole and a tree.
The vehicle had two occupants, both 15-year-old boys from New Port Richey. Tragically, neither of the teens were wearing seatbelts and both were found in possession of alcoholic beverages. The driver and the passenger suffered serious injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital. The passenger later succumbed to his injuries.

The crash resulted in the closure of part of State Road 54 for several hours before the roadway reopened at approximately 1 p.m. Sunday. The FHP has stated that charges are expected for the 15-year-old driver, though the specific charges are still pending as the investigation continues.
