The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced the crew for the Artemis III mission, a pivotal step in preparing for future lunar landings. This mission will test spacecraft and landing systems in Earth orbitensuring the safety and success of upcoming moon missions.
The crew, consisting of veteran astronaut Randy Bresnik as commander, Luca Parmitano from the European Space Agency (ESA) as pilot, and NASA astronauts Andre Douglas and Frank Rubio as mission specialists, will launch as early as next year aboard the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft.
The Artemis III Mission: A Critical Test for Lunar Landings
The Artemis III mission, originally planned as the program’s first lunar landing mission, has been revised to conduct an Earth-orbit test. This test will allow astronauts to dock Orion with lunar landers being developed by Blue Origin and SpaceX. The approximately two-week flight will involve rendezvousing with Blue Origin’s Mark 2 lunar lander and later docking with SpaceX’s Starship Human Landing System.
This mission is a crucial precursor to Artemis IVthe first planned crewed mission to the lunar South Pole in 2028. The Artemis III mission will undertake a series of challenging tests in Earth orbit in 2027, essential for the success of Artemis IV.
Preparations and Progress
Preparations for the Artemis III launch are well underway on Florida’s Space Coast. The rocket’s core stage is already inside the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Centerwith booster segments arriving soon. Engineers will connect the Orion crew module and service module this summer and integrate the spacecraft’s docking system, which will fly for the first time.
Heat shield testing continues, with individual blocks undergoing ultrasonic inspections and being installed onto the heat shield structure. Rocket processing is also well underway, with technicians integrating the engine section with the rest of the core stage ahead of installing the four RS-25 engines this summer.
Lunar Lander Developments
Blue Origin is developing a crewed lunar version of the company’s Blue Moon landerwhile SpaceX is developing a crewed lunar lander version of the company’s Starship. Both companies are building test articles for Artemis III, with NASA supporting them throughout design, development, testing, and evaluation.
The mission will involve launching the world’s most powerful rockets in short order. Blue Origin’s lander pathfinder, capable of staying in orbit for multiple weeks, will launch first and await the crew. NASA will send the astronauts aboard Orion on an SLS mission to orbit Earth, before rendezvousing in space with the company’s lander test article and spending about two days docked together for tests and technology demonstrations, including entering the lander.
After completing docked operations with Blue Origin, Orion will detach and await Starship. SpaceX’s Starship pathfinder will launch and rendezvous with Orion to spend about a day connected for checkout and testing. After that, Orion and its crew will undock and return home, splashing safely down in the Pacific Oceanwhere a team from the U.S. Navy and NASA will recover the astronauts.
The Crew: Experienced and Ready
The four astronauts selected for the Artemis III mission bring a wealth of experience and expertise. Commander Randy Bresnik, a veteran astronaut, has previously flown on the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Pilot Luca Parmitano, an Italian from the ESA, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and humility in facing the task ahead.
Mission Specialist Andre Douglas, a Virginia native, will embark on his first spaceflight. He previously served as a backup crew member during Artemis II. Mission Specialist Frank Rubio, a Florida native, is seeing his second spaceflight after spending 371 days aboard the International Space Station from September 2026 to September 2026, setting a long-duration spaceflight record.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman highlighted the significance of the mission, stating, “Today we take another bold step in humanity’s return to the Moon, building on the extraordinary foundation laid by the Artemis II astronauts.”
The crew will begin training immediately on Orion spacecraft systems and will assist in the development and operations of test versions of Blue Origin and SpaceX landers. NASA astronaut Bob Hines was named as a backup crew member, ensuring the mission’s success.
